How to Keep Bean Weevils (a Tiny, Self-Sustaining Feeder)

Sep 11, 2026NutriGrubs

Bean weevils are about as low-maintenance as feeders get. They're tiny, they feed and breed themselves, and they're perfect for small or young animals that need a micro-sized meal. Here's the short version of how to keep them, because there really isn't much to it.

What are bean weevils for?

Bean weevils are a tiny feeder, ideal for small or young reptiles, amphibians, mantises, and dart frogs. They live and breed right in the beans they come in, so there's no daily feeding on your part.

How to keep them

Keep them at room temperature, and leave them in the container they arrive in. That container is a mix of old and new beans, and the weevils like to hide in and around the beans. There's nothing to add and nothing to feed, the beans take care of everything. Just keep the lid on so they stay put.

Don't throw out the container when the weevils seem gone. Once you've used up all the bean weevils you can see, hang onto the container. They've very likely laid eggs in the beans, which will hatch into a fresh batch of weevils at some point, so you often get more feeders out of the same cup for free.

When you're truly finished with it, freeze it before disposal. Bean weevils are a stored-bean pest, so when a culture is genuinely done, pop the container in the freezer for a few days before throwing it out rather than releasing them live.

Cup size may vary from what's shown on the website.

Getting them out to feed

There's a piece of paper in the cup when you receive them. When you need some for your pet, open the lid, pull the paper out, and tap it into a container to shake off what you need. Be quick though, they move fast!

The short version

Bean weevils are a tiny, self-sustaining feeder for small animals. Keep them at room temperature in the container they arrive in, lid on, and let the beans do the work. To feed, pull out the paper inside and tap off what you need, quickly, they're fast. Keep the cup even after the weevils seem used up, since more will likely hatch, and when you're finished for good, freeze the cup before disposing of it.
