How to Keep Superworms Alive (a Meaty, Active Feeder for Bigger Reptiles)

Sep 11, 2026NutriGrubs

Superworms are a satisfying, high-energy feeder with a strong feeding response, ideal for larger reptiles that want something with a bit more substance. They're also one of the easier feeders to keep, as long as you remember one rule: never put them in the fridge. Here's how to keep them alive and feeding well.

What are superworms?

Superworms come from the darkling beetle, larger and meatier than mealworms, with a good protein content and an active wriggle that triggers a strong feeding response. Their tough exterior and strong jaws mean they suit medium-to-large animals, not very small or juvenile reptiles.

They're a great feeder for larger reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals.

Feed in moderation, and dust them

Superworms are fairly high in fat, so they're best fed in moderation as part of a varied diet rather than as an everyday staple. They're also low in calcium, so dust them with a calcium supplement before feeding.

What size should I feed?

Ours run approximately 1.75″ to 2″. Because of their size, tough skin, and jaws, they're best matched to medium and larger reptiles, not tiny or juvenile animals.

How to keep them alive

Superworms are low-maintenance, with one hard rule.

Keep them at room temperature. Never refrigerate them. This is the big one. Unlike mealworms, superworms do not go dormant in the cold, so a fridge harms them. Room temperature is where they belong.

Store them in the container you receive them in. They'll nibble on the wheat bran or oat substrate they come in, so there's nothing to add.

Add a slice of carrot or sweet potato for moisture, and change it every 1 to 2 days. Fresh veg keeps them hydrated; swapping it out on that schedule prevents mould.

A quick word on freshness

Feeders are only as good as they are fresh. Fresher superworms are firmer, more active, and more readily taken, so order what you'll use and feed them off while they're at their best.

The short version

Superworms are a meaty, active feeder with a strong feeding response, best for medium and larger reptiles, fairly high in fat so feed in moderation, and low in calcium so dust them. Keep them at room temperature, never in the fridge, in the container they arrive in, with a slice of carrot or sweet potato changed every 1 to 2 days.
